The subgenres of any type of music are seemingly infinite and country is no exception; Appalachian folk, bluegrass, Cajun, outlaw, rockabilly. But red dirt? It was certainly a new subgenre to my ears, the term came straight from the mouth of self-proclaimed “red dirt” musician, Tylor Bushman. A solo act as “Tylor Bushman,” a group act in “Tylor and the Train Robbers,” as well as the side project “Cheap Yellow Beer,” Oregon transplant, and now Ketchum native, Tylor is bringing a very specific type of country music to venues all over Idaho. By channeling fellow Idaho musicians like Micky & the Motorcars, Reckless Kelly, the Braun Brothers as well as classic country musicians like Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and George DeVore, Tylor plays country unlike any other in town. “Red dirt is just what we call our sound when people ask what we play. We’ve been leaning toward the ‘honky tonk’ side of country but still with some rock in it,” explains Tylor. Red dirt it is.
