This is Not Your Mother’s YMCA by Martha McGuinness, photography by Halsey Pierce

I have a vivid childhood memory. It stems from junior high swim team practice at my town’s local YMCA. Each day at four pm, we’d walk through the front doors to a cheerful, brightly lit lobby. The sound of happy children splashing in the pool echoed in the background. And, like all YMCAs back then, a distinct scent of chlorine wafted though the building.
