A Girl and Her Eagle: Coming of Age in Mongolia by Mark Menlove, Photography by Asher Svidensky

It is poignant irony that the elderly male Kazakh eagle hunters, most of whom vehemently reject the idea of any female taking part in their ancient tradition, capture and hunt exclusively with female golden eagles because they are larger, stronger, and fiercer than their male counterparts. This stunning film celebrates female ferocity and quiet strength—attributes of the film’s lead character, 13-year-old Aisholpan, and her golden eagle, White Wings.
