Small Worlds
This solo exhibition by British watercolorist Tony Foster features a collection of small original watercolors. Usually working ‘en plein air’ in some of the world’s wildest places, Foster creates small watercolors on site, then returns to his studio to produce his larger paintings. For this exhibition, however, Foster has reversed his usual convention, distilling a selection of larger paintings made over the course of 40 years into smaller paintings.
Alongside each subject, an accompanying “souvenir” is framed alongside the watercolor representing what Foster considers to be the threat to that location’s survival. The paintings are a selection from the estimated 1,000 works Foster has completed over his lifetime—the favorite “small worlds” in which he has spent his life.
Tony Berlant
Internationally known for his innovative collage-based works and a seminal figure in the West Coast Pop movement, Berlant has worked across a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and collage. The exhibition will feature a selection of large-scale panels, three-dimensional house forms, and freestanding sculptures. Constructed from found tin signage and held together with thousands of tiny brads, these works transform everyday images drawn from American consumer culture. Through cutting, manipulating, and reassembling the materials, Berlant strips them of their original identities and brings disparate imagery together to create cohesive and compelling new objects.
Don Nice
Don Nice was a leading figure in American art who emerged in the early 1960s as one of the “new perceptual realists.” Raised in California’s San Joaquin Valley, his early experiences as a ranch hand and outdoorsman fostered a lifelong connection to the American landscape. Nice developed a distinctive style. Working in watercolor, oil, and sculpture depicting everyday American objects and iconic landscapes, Nice’s work explores the relationship between popular culture, nature, and the enduring character of American life.
