The Alchemy of Restoration: Gail Severn Gallery by Courtney Lauck, Photography by Ben Figueiredo

When my editor, our photographer, and I walk into Ketchum’s renowned Gail Severn Gallery, it is Gail Severn herself that shepherds us back beyond the gallery’s cool exterior into a workshop that most people don’t see. It’s a room that, in contrast to the gleaming polished tone of the gallery outside, displays an organized clutter of hundreds of different art materials and the smell of wood frames all waiting to be purposed in the alchemy of restoration. We’ve come to survey the universe of art conservation and Severn is the telescope through which we will view its workings.
